Procurement Number:
Smart City - Free Public WiFi
The Government of Barbados has embarked on a new digital agenda to transform Barbados’ economy and society. An essential component of Barbados’ future economy will be Barbadians ability to deliver professional services to the world using high-speed internet connection. To fast track this new agenda, Government, the private sector and individuals will need to embrace the digital economy. One of the initiatives to lead this transformation will be the facilitation of free, basic Wi-Fi, across the island. The provision of universal access to a minimum threshold of high-speed broadband Internet is a means of powering the new national digital economy, Smart Cities and a Smart Barbados. This will also be an enabler for growth, connectivity, innovation and fully integrated platforms for social and economic activity. The provision of WiFi in Bridgetown will be a precursor to the implementation of wireless services across the country. It will also facilitate a number of “Smart” services such as parking, augmented reality tours, environmental monitoring, traffic management and safe city initiatives, among others. It will support the development of an Internet of Things (IoT) platform that integrates all services and provides useful data for more efficient management of public infrastructure and the provision of data for public policy development.
